Why another writing blog?

Writing pad

My first reaction to this question would be, why not, but then that would not do justice to the About page. I should explain a bit more why I have started this new blog on writing especially when there are scores, or may be hundreds of other blogs, some of them excellent I would say, dealing with myriad aspects of writing. What new I’m going to offer here? What new light can I throw on the subject of the greatest art of expression the humankind has developed so far? I’m not sure.

Here is a cliche I’m going to say: I have always wanted to be a writer. Although it may sound cliched I’ve actually taken some steps towards this aspiration. In 2004 I wrapped up my web designing work and started writing content, mostly for online businesses. This was a big move, but it paid off within a year and I was earning more than what I used to earn designing and developing websites; earning money off his or her writing can be a big boost. That was also a time when blogging was taking big strides and people were covering — just like now — practically every subject under the sun, including writing. To keep track of my writing progress and to indulge in occasional literary activities I started Writing Cave, but somewhere I lost track and that blog never succeeded in attaining a definitive identity. Sometimes I dabble with literature, but I mostly write about current affairs and other social issues of contemporary relevance. For the time being Writing Cave has got nothing to do with writing.

Whenever I visit a writing blog the desire to have my own writing blog rises its head like a trapped Sphinx. Lack of time, coupled with "what new can I offer after all" kept me from starting one. But then a few days ago I registered a domain, set it up on my hosting account, installed WordPress, developed a simple theme and let it be there. Even if I’ve got nothing new to offer, having a writing blog is far better than not having it. Today (February 17, 2008) I’m writing this About page.

The direction of this blog

I’m not planning to be a writing teacher/guru through this blog; I myself am at a beginning stage. It will have lots of writing stuff from other blogs. I will try to cover all sorts of writing: online content, blogging, literature, journalism, technical writing, script writing, playwriting and whatever else. I envision A Writing Blog as a destination for all who want to read good writing, and who want to learn writing and who want to improve their writing skills. Once it has earned some name for itself reputed writers and blogger will be invited to share their thoughts and I will also encourage readers to post guest posts once enough traffic is coming.

For the time being I think that’s it. If I need to add more I’ll add this page later on. I hope you enjoy your visits here.
